Dota 2 Champions of Global Tournaments 2014

What is a ‚global‘ tournament you ask? Well, we define it as a tournament with a prize pool higher than 100,000 dollar. There have been twelve of these global tournaments so far this year – and most of them were won by chinese teams.

It all started on January 1st. When everyone around the world was recovering from New Years Eves hangover, [team dk] already made some money by beating [incivtus gaming] in the finals of WPC Ace Dota League by 4:3. It was one of the best series this year as well, because [invictus gaming] was ahead by 3:0 before they lost it.

[team dk] repeated their success by winning the Star Ladder Star Series 8 in April as well. But this time they didn’t lose a single match in the tournament, beating [team empire] in the finals by 2:0. The predecessor of Star Ladder Star Series 9, which was of course season 8 in January, was a purely european competition won by [natus vincere] – their only big success this year.

The only european team to win a global tournament besides [natus vincere] was [alliance]. They triumphed at ASUS ROG Dreamleague in June. The swedish team had barely survived the preliminaries and had a hard time beating [team empire] and [cloud 9] at the finals. Once again, no asian teams were present.

When they were, europeans didn’t stand a chance. ESL One Frankfurt in June was the time to shine for [invictus gaming], The International in July was won by [newbee] followed by [vici gaming]. Five of the eight best team at The International were chinese, only [natus vincere] was european. [vici gaming] and [newbee] also won i-league, World Cyber Arena and ESL One New York in September and October.

The only team to break the chinese domination is currently [evil geniuses]. The Americans were runner-up at both ESL One Frankfurt and New York and third at The International. And they also managed to win both World E-Sport Championship and Star Ladder Star Series Season 10. In the former they beat both [newbee] and [vici gaming].

Three more global tournaments are yet to come this year: ASUS ROG DreamLeague Season 2 in November, The Summit 2 and WePlay Dota2 League Season 3 in December. We’ll see if chinese domination continues.
