Yoon 'TaeJa' Young Suh at IEM Shenzhen

World Ranking August 2014: TaeJa is the new Number One!

Yoon ‚TaeJa‘ Young Suh is the new Number One in the World Ranking of August 2014. He follows Choi ‚Polt‘ Seong Hun who had a succesful month as well but nothing compared to TaeJa. The young Korean won IEM Shenzhen and succeeded in WCS America as well.

[playerbox_taeja]
[taeja] is the new Number One of the World Ranking. He climbed from rank 2 to 1 this month due to his success in IEM Shenzhen, which he won, and the 5th place in WCS America. He is the fourth youngest player at the top being 19 years and 211 days old. He is surpassed though by [life], who was 16 years old when he reached the top, [parting] (18) and [stephano] (19 years, 202 days).

The former leader, [polt] fell to second rank. He had a succesful month too being runner-up at Red Bull Battleground Atlanta and also 5th at WCS America. It just wasn’t enough to stay ahead of [taeja]. By the way it was the third time in two months that [polt] ended up being the runner-up in an important tournament.

Some ranks further down we got a few players who rise significantly this month: Aforemost [bomber] is back in the top 10. The runner-up of WCS America and winner of Red Bull Battlegrounds Atlanta is the third most succesful player this month in terms of points earned. He is only surpassed by WCS Europe winner [stardust] who gained 16 ranks and is on #12 now and of course [pigbaby] who beat [bomber] in the finals and jumped from #196 to #29.

Best foreigners this month: Snute, Major and Welmu

The best foreigner is [scarlett] on rank 24 though she gained only a few points in July playing team league. Just two ranks behind is [snute] who wasn’t only the best player of the Nation Wars II but also played well at Gfinity yesterday – though that doesn’t count for the current ranking. Remarkable: [major] rises to rank 38 being the second best player in the Nation Wars and #9 in WCS America. [vortix] and [welmu] however, the best foreigners in WCS Europe, both only gained one rank and stay on #28 and #34 respectively.

Shooting stars: Gamja, Cowman and Frustration

The highest jumps this month were done by [gamja], [cowman] and [frustration]. The Korean was 9th at Red Bull Battleground Atlanta as was the American, while the Australian was 5th at the Australian Cyber League Pro Circuit in Sydney. Needless to say it was their greatest success each.

Some numbers: 522 new results

Let’s end this overview with some numbers: Last month, 522 new results were added to the database which now consists of 712 tournaments with 2.819 players and 15.228 results since August 2010. Outr of the top 100 players this month, 60 are Koreans, five are from China or Germany, three from the United States. 43 of them play Protoss, 34 Zerg and 23 Terran.

The most awesome beard and the best female player battle in Americas final day of Challenger League tonight

Yesterday we saw a 14-year-old entering WCS America Premier League so why not have some oddity tonight too? Challenger League is packed with the best female player in the world, Sasha ‚Scarlett‘ Hostyn, the best random player Jung Woo ‚Balloon‘ Joon, the man with the most awesome beard Ethan ‚iaguz‘ Zugai and the up to now total noname John ‚Believe‘ Lagousakos. Here are some stats and trivia about WCS America Challenger League Day 3.

[match_qxc_iaguz_0:1_0:2_1:3]

After his first season in Premier League [qxc] finds himself back in the WCS. And with [iaguz] he got an opponent that is beatable, though qxc lost when both met in the MLG Anaheim qualifier in May. Since then qxc won 7 out of 9 matches of TvT only losing to [jjakji] and [dayshi] while iaguz is out of training. His last and only TvT recently was against [xenocider] at MLG Anaheim in June – and he lost. But you can guess the Australian is well prepared for his first WCS Challenger league game ever. After all he might become the first Australian in Premier League since [moonglade] one year ago.

[match_illusion_gemini_0:0_0:0_3:0]

Though his World Rank might not be the highest, [illusion] is up for his third consecutive season in WCS America Premier League. As a player defending his slot he got a considerably weaker opponent in [gemini]. The chinese Protoss qualified for his first tournament outside of China. As both players have never met before and TvP is their weakest matchup respectively, it is hard to tell who will have the upper hand here. Your guess?

[match_hero2_ian_0:0_0:0_3:0]

[hero2] was the champion of 2013 WCS America Season 1 but after that his efforts got lower and lower. He hit rock bottom last season when [huk] and [revival] eliminated him in the Ro32. After that he came back with a second place at Dreamhack Summer and is now ready to rock WCS again. His opponent [ian] should be no obstacle on HerO’s way since the Taiwanese isn’t even a big star in his home country. Last season he lost 0:3 to [check].

[match_jim_believe_0:0_0:0_3:1]

Hard to imagine how this match could be any more unbalanced. [believe] is a player who has no record of individual tournaments yet whereas [jim] is one of the best chinese players and was part of the Premier League last season. Nevertheless Believe survived the american qualifier and beat people who were supposedly stronger than him, so why shouldn’t he surprise here again?

[match_puck_balloon_0:0_0:0_3:0]

There aren’t a lot of players out there whose race is „Random“ but [balloon] surely is the best of them. He was picked up by StarTale after a good run in the WCS Korea Challenger League in 2013. He retired in November and came back in April, moving to the United States for university and joining swiss bases myInsanity – as an 18-year-old by the way. He played HomeStory Cup and Dreamhack Summer on a european tour in June and was able to surprise in both tournaments. So [puck] should be warned – his streak of four consecutive seasons in Premier League might end today.

[match_sen_scarlett_0:1_0:3_2:3]

Thanks to Blizzard the best match of this Premier League is saved for last. [sen] and [scarlett] both belong to the best 30 players of the World Ranking. Though it’s somehow a shame one of them has to leave WCS tonight, their match might be the highlight of the Challenger League. A long time ago, in 2012, both met in a GSL-Tournament and Scarlett won 3:0. Let’s see if she can repeat this success. It’s almost been a year since she was third in WCS America and fifth in the following Season Finals – and only three months since she lost 0:3 in Challenger League to [hendralisk].

Lee 'INnoVation' Shin Hyung Starcraft World Ranking

INoVation stays at the top of the World Ranking in June

Lee ‚INnoVation‘ Shin Hyung is still the number one in the World Ranking of June 2014. It’s his seventh consecutive month at the top which he confirmed by winning two invitational tournaments in May. His predators remain the same: Kim ’sOs‘ Yoo Jin stays at the second place after a good performance at the Proleague Round 3 and Choi ‚Polt‘ Seong Hun is still third after losing the finals of Lone Star Clash 3 to Jaedong.

Few changes at the top – Mvp loses 27 ranks

[playerbox_innovation] The only changes at the very top are [jaedong] and [hyun] switching ranks with [dear] and [mma], who didn’t play any tournament last month. [parting] and [life] moved a little closer to the Top10 due to their performances in the 2014 Proleague Round 3 which finished in May. Meanwhile, former WCS Europe champions [mvp] suffered a decline from rank 14 to 41.

Last month saw three major tournaments and naturally their winners made high jumps in the World Ranking: Best Proleague player [bbyong] moved up 26 ranks to #56 – a new career-high for the 21-year-old Korean, while the aforementioned [jaedong] and [hyun] gained one rank by winning Lone Star Clash 3 and the Fragbite Spring Masters. Fragbites runner-up [vortix] rose to #28, his best position since last August.

Foreigners: Snute, Scarlett and Stephano

Norwegian Snute is meanwhile on his way to be the best foreigner in the ranking. Winning the TakeTV Ultra Invitational he is now only one rank behind inactive [naniwa] who will lose a lot of points next month due to deleted results from the last year. This is what happened to [stephano] this month already who dropped from #42 to #103. In between Snute and VortiX there is still the best female player out there, [scarlett]. The Canadian won the Believe in Sc2 Cup in May but dropped out of WCS America in the Challenger League.

Special rankings are expanded

As usual the World Ranking gives you an overview of the players performances of the past 12 months. Since this is a long period that includes 1.162 players from 58 countries, there are some more specialized top-rankings that show some aspects of the ranking and help you figure out who did something special this month – for example you can see the best players of the past 3 months instead of 12. I expanded the Special Rankings this month so you can see more details and have a clearer overview. If you wish to see more or other rankings, please send me an email.
