TaeJa and Major may benefit from their opponents Terran-weakness tonight

Yoon ‚TaeJa‘ Young Suh is not only the huge favourite of tonights WCS America Ro16 group, the weakness of his opponents Yoon ‚Arthur‘ Myung Hyuk and Kim ‚viOLet‘ Dong Hwan also plays in his favor. Can terran player Juan Carlos ‚MajOr‘ Tena also benefit from this? Stats and trivia of group D.

Trivia

  • [major] just beat [violet] ten days ago at MLG Anaheim but overall viOLet won 4 out of 6 matches
  • [taeja] and [arthur] met in last seasons Ro16 as well where Taeja won 2:0. He met with Major in both of the last two Ro32 in WCS America. Each time Taeja and Major won one match each.
  • The young Korean won all of his 4 matches against viOLet
  • Taeja might face every other race in this group – not a problem since he is 10:0 in TvP and 5:0 in TvZ this month
  • Major however only has a positive record in TvP
  • Arthur is on a 10:3 record in PvZ but struggles in PvT lately
  • Unfortunately, viOLet also struggles versus Terran though he is good in ZvP lately
  • In his three appearances in WCS America, Taeja only once dropped out in the Ro16
  • Major already plays his best WCS-season ever. He never made it past the Ro32 so far
  • Arthur was fifth last season but he had a hard time in the Ro16
  • viOLet dropped out in the Ro16 twice last year and never made it further

Polt and Bomber have to get rid of Toodming and Check in order to reach to quarter-finals again

Last season both Choi ‚Polt‘ Seong Hun and Choi ‚Bomber‘ Ji Sung were in the playoffs of WCS America – to achieve the same again they have to beat Huang ‚TooDming‘ Hui Ming and Kim ‚Check‘ Min Gyu in the Round of 16 tonight. This would be easier if both korean Terrans were in better shape in TvZ than they are lately. Stats and trivia of group C.

Snute

Snute wins WCS Ro16 because he beats his nemesis for the first time in four months

Europe is no Korean soil in this WCS Round of 16 so far: Snute wins Group B against jjakji just like Vortix defeated his eastern rivals MMA and Mvp yesterday. jjakji made it to the quarter-finals anyways but he had to struggle more than expected, securing his spot on the last map against Dayshi. While one European is happy today, another one might be sad: Grubby dropped out of the group without a mapwin, making it 7-8 maps in this WCS season – not his best game, but $3.000 none the less.

The players

Dayshi
[dayshi]
Name: Antoine Stievenart
Age: 19
Race: Terran
WCS Map Record: 11-5
World Rank: 56
Community Rank: 100Dropped out, but still a winner: [dayshi] may have been the underdog in this group, but the French continues his rise both in strength and in the World Ranking: WCS Round of 16 is his greatest accomplishmet yet and it might boost him into the Top50 of the World Ranking. He might even pass [grubby] – just as he beat him thrice in a row this month.
Grubby
[grubby]
Name: Manuel Schenkhuizen
Age: 27
Race: Protoss
WCS Map Record: 7-8
World Rank: 48
Community Rank: 68This WCS Europe was a tough one for [grubby] – in the Round of 32 he barely fought back from the Losers Bracket after losing to [tlo], now he dropped out of his group without a mapwin. Since he attended the Season 2 Finals last August, the Dutch hasn’t been on the top of his game. Furthermore, [dayshi] proved to be in better shape once again after beating Grubby twice in the SeatStory Cup last weekend.
jjakji
[jjakji]
Name: Jung Ji Hoon
Age: 20
Race: Terran
WCS Map Record: 12-5
World Rank: 54
Community Rank: 11[jjakji]s rise to the top seems inevitable: The Korean will be the most rising player of both February and March and if he continues his winning streak in WCS, he might even go further in April. How far? Well, the Korean is a former GSL-champion and was once close to the Top10 back in 2012. Seemingly he regains his former strength currently – even though his five match winning streak against [snute] was put to an end today.
Snute
[snute]
Name: Jens Aasgaard
Age: 23
Race: Zerg
WCS Map Record: 11-5
World Rank: 25
Community Rank: 60After a full year of WCS America, [snute] is back in Europe for his first WCS-season. It might be a great one: Right away he qualified for the quarter-finals, it’s his second time playing Ro8 in WCS – last time was almost a year ago. Key to this success was that Snute overcame his nemesis [jjakji] – the Korean had won the past five (!) matches since December.

Two former champions get going in WCS Europe

What a group to start WCS Europe Round of 16 with: Former champions MMA and Mvp will face Spanish top-player Vortix and the danish Bunny in group A. Three Terrans competing against a lonely Zerg, the complete opposite to every GSL-group in this season. But only two will advance to the quarter-finals, whereas the other two will be able to console themselves with $3.000.

WCS is played in Double Elimination mode: A player who wins two matches advances, a player who loses twice is out

The players

Bunny
[bunny]
Name: Patrick Brix
Age: 21
Race: Terran
WCS Map Record: 8-4
World Rank: 73
Community Rank: 97

[bunny] is the only player in this group that had to play the Challenger League to get here. Just being in Ro16 though is the best effort the Danish has ever shown in WCS so far. Last season he was in a group with [vortix] in Ro32 but they didn’t play each other. Bunnys weakness: Korean Terrans. In his past two seasons [forgg] knocked him out twice. Hopefully this is no curse…

MMA
[mma]
Name: Mun Seong Won
Age: 25
Race: Terran
WCS Map Record: 5-3
World Rank: 13
Community Rank: 16

[mma] is the defending champion of WCS Europe, but he struggled in Ro32. [welmu] defeated the Korean in the Winner Bracket Final, so he had to play a set of three maps against [starbuck] to advance. It’s hard to say how good MMA is in shape: At Warer.com Invitational he lost to another Korean Terran, [taeja] and at the weekend he was beaten by [vortix] in the Vasacast Invitational.

Mvp
[mvp]
Name: Jung Jong Hyun
Age: 23
Race: Terran
WCS Map Record: 4-0
World Rank: 12
Community Rank: 9

[mvp] won WCS Europe back in Season 1 of 2013 but his results declined afterwards from #9 in Season 2 to #17 in Season 3. However he is unbeaten this season though [firecake] and [snute] weren’t the hardest opponents in Ro32. Mvp hasn’t finished a tournament since his appearance at IEM Singapore in December and only played two maps in Proleague so it will be interesting to see how he performs today.

Vortix
[vortix]
Name: Juan Moreno Duran
Age: 20
Race: Zerg
WCS Map Record: 4-2
World Rank: 35
Community Rank: 64

[vortix] is in great shape: The Spanish recently won the Vasacast Invitational beating three Terrans ([select], [mma] and [jjakji]) on the way and also dominated ESL Spain Season 11 not losing a single map during the tournament. Last season he was third in WCS Europe, so advancing to the quarter-finals today might sound like a piece of cake for Vortix.
