MVP Phoenix just made history: The Koreans are the first team from the Southeastasian region (SEA) to win a global Dota 2 tournament with more than 100,000 dollar prize money. Congratulations!
MVP Phoenix just beat Evil Geniuses to win the Dota Pit League Season 4. That is a historic moment. Never before has a team from the SEA region won a Dota tournament with more than 100,000 dollar prize money and participants from all over the world (i am stressing the last point because some Korean tournaments also had so much prize money in the past).
MVPs success was foreshadowed at the Shanghai Major two weeks ago. There Dubu and his teammates reached the Lower Bracket Final which they lost EG – now they took revenge. But the fourth place at the Major was already the best performance of an SEA-team in a Valve event since 2013.
At the Dota Pit League in Split, Croatia, this weekend, MVP Phoenix played even better than in Shanghai. They beat OG, compLexity Gaming and EG flawlessly, winning seven games while losing none. It will put them close to the top10 in next months Dota 2 Team World Ranking.
MVP Phoenix is also the first SEA team ever in a Grand Final
Teams from Southeastasia have rarely been in top spots of global tournaments: Since the release of Dota 2 there have been 44 tournaments with a prize pool of more than 100,000 dollar. Just four times there was an SEA-team on rank 3 of any of these tournaments: Scythe Gaming at the International 2011, Orange Esports at the International 2013, Rave at the i-league 2014 and Team Malaysia at i-league Season 3 last year.
